The Helikon Squall Hardshell Jacket is a new membrane rain jacket that offers effective protection against rain and snow. It will be perfect for everyday use, in the city, as well as for various outdoor activities or tactical operations. The difference between a softshell jacket, such as the Blizzard or Gunfighter jacket, and a hardshell jacket is significant. A softshell jacket provides protection against light wind and short-term rain, mainly due to its tightly woven nylon fabric with DWR treatment, while a hardshell uses a membrane that provides much greater waterproofing while maintaining good breathability. The Helikon Squall jacket combines these two features.
The Helikon Squall jacket is designed with flexibility of use in mind. It can be worn as a standalone jacket in spring and as an outer layer for winter expeditions, allowing an additional insulating layer, such as the Wolfhound Hoodie jacket, to be worn underneath. The jacket has three practical pockets, two of which are at chest height to avoid interfering with backpack chest straps. The third pocket is inside the jacket and is designed to store documents or a phone. The Squall jacket can also be packed into its own hood, taking up little space, which is very practical for travel.
The membrane properties in the Helikon Squall jacket are based on TorrentStretch technology, a three-layer laminate developed by Helikon-Tex specialists. Between the durable outer layer and the integrated lining is a membrane with micropores that blocks water from entering the jacket while allowing moisture generated by the body (in the form of water vapor) to effectively escape. The Helikon Squall hardshell jacket is characterized by very high water resistance of 30,000 mm water column and breathability, which in the case of TorrentStretch laminate is 30,000 g/m2/24h. Another important parameter is the evaporative resistance coefficient (RET), which determines the permeability of water vapor through the membrane. The lower the RET coefficient, the better the jacket's breathability. The Helikon Squall hardshell has an RET value below 5, which proves very good air permeability.
Additional protection against moisture is provided by taped seams, an adjustable hood with a high collar, and waterproof YKK® AquaGuard® zippers. The main two-way zipper at the bottom is secured with a Prym fastener. The Squall jacket is also treated with a water-repellent DWR coating that does not contain harmful PFC (perfluorocarbon) substances.
Additional ventilation is provided by underarm vents. These are especially useful during higher exertion, providing better ventilation and body temperature regulation. Adjustable Velcro cuffs and drawstrings in the hood and the bottom of the jacket allow the jacket to be adjusted to individual preferences and weather conditions.
